Raising the Standard in Learning and Development Practice

BTEC Level 5 Professional Certificate in Learning Practice Management

Those with ambition and the desire to develop professionally and commercially understand that business management courses in their field are vital. Until now learning practitioners have had to make do with more generic management courses for human resources professionals which are not specifically tailored to practice of learning and development.

This gap in the training market has now been addressed with the new Edexcel approved, BTEC Level 5 Professional Certificate in Learning Practice Management from TrainerBase. A practical, comprehensive level 5 (HND/C equivalent) exam and assessment based qualification with 200 hours of workshops and self learning.

This is the only qualification based on the “Standard for Learning Practitioners” which was developed by a group of experts in learning and development practice. This standard is a development and competence framework that evidences the application of knowledge.

Who is it for?

This new qualification is relevant for a wide variety of learning practitioners, including: freelance trainers, training organisation managers and owners, internal trainers, training managers and line managers. It is focused on learning practice and has a wide range of applications.

Take Sarah, a manager in a telecommunications company responsible for the customer complaints department. Though not training telephone staff herself, Sarah has to demonstrate to senior staff that her department is meeting targets and her staff are working according to company guidelines. By taking the Certificate in Learning Practice Management, Sarah will be able to manage training design and delivery in her department and ensure that outcomes contribute towards her organisation’s business goals as well as furthering the individual learner’s professional development.

James is a Major in the Army; a helicopter pilot and instructor. He has been through a number of comprehensive instructor courses. James is retiring from the forces and wishes to continue his training career as a freelance team and leadership trainer. By taking the Certificate in Learning Practice Management James will be introduced to the concepts of business planning and also marketing and selling training programmes. This will enable him to put together a structured plan for his business, improving the likelihood of success.

Simon is a senior systems analyst and department manager at a software development house. He is responsible for the induction and training of graduate programmers. Whilst Simon believes he is capable of ‘educating’ his staff, like many managers in his position he has no formal knowledge of learning and development practice. By taking the Certificate in Learning Practice Management, Simon will learn what his own training style is and recognise the different ways his staff learn. This will make his training more effective. Simon will also be able to write, deliver and evaluate his training in line with the business needs of his organisation.

Adi is a freelance management trainer running open courses and custom programmes for both private and public sector organisations within her area. She has become aware that a number of her commissioning managers are asking her to help them justify their budgets. By taking the Certificate in Learning Practice Management Adi will be in a position to consult, evaluate and report on the business benefits of management programmes at all levels, including senior director. As a result she will secure her place as the preferred supplier of this type of training.

More than training

TrainerBase has long been aware that being a ‘trainer’ is an over simplistic term that does little to support the essential role of learning and development within today’s modern knowledge based economy. Learning and development practice is more than training. Learning and development practice is:

  • the analysis and identification of knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements within an organisational context relating to the aims and objectives of an individual, team, department and organisation leading to the creation, encouragement and management of environments where the learning and behaviour change required will take place

Within the context of the above definition training may be a level 3* activity but Learning and Development Practice Management is more than training.

*
Level 3 is indicative of a qualification at GCSE.
Level 5 is indicative of HND/C or first year degree

There are countless train the trainer courses available however CertLPM is a management level training programme with a commercial focus specifically for learning practitioners, that recognises the essential role of learning and development practice in today’s knowledge based economy.

Learning and development practice is not just about delivering knowledge or skills. For learning practitioners in the workplace, it is about understanding how knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements relate to commercial objectives at every level from the individual to the whole organisation. Furthermore, it is about using that understanding to create effective learning and development activities with measurable outcomes. This is management level activity. This qualification offers Level 5 management training.

What will I gain

Using various tools including psychometric profiles, the BTEC Level 5 Professional Certificate in Learning Practice Management will first help you understand more about yourself so that you can engage more effectively with learners, clients, managers and senior directors. Then using this deeper understanding you will work through units that cover design, environment, content, delivery, business planning, marketing, selling, monitoring and assets in learning and development. The whole focus is on learning and development practice as a management activity. It provides the knowledge and skills for a learning and development practitioner to:

  • interact professionally with others
  • devise and maintain their own continuing professional development
  • consult at a senior level on knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements
  • create environments where learning and change happens
  • argue the business case for learning and development
  • maximise the use of assets for the benefit of individuals, teams, departments and organisations
