TrainerBase

The Association for Learning Practitioners

!*FIRSTNAME*!

Welcome to the TrainerBase update number 234.

TrainerBase is working towards being recognised as the voice for independent learning practitioners. The new Association has an official launch date as April 2008. We will showcase at HRD2008 at Excel on 15 - 17th April 2008. We will divide the stand to enable us to showcase the benefits of the Association and the Certified Learning Practitioner accreditation to both purchasers of training and providers of training. We will be following the theme "Helping trainers find business and businesses find trainers".

If you have any thoughts, ideas or opportunities which would help us grow as an Association, please do let us know.

Onwards and upwards.

Peter

During 2008 we will be looking to use the local chapter meeting to support the CPD of members, especially those undertaking the Certified Learning Practitioner accreditation. The Conference

Just a quick note to say that the conference last week was an outstanding success and enjoyed by everyone.

I kicked off the day brining participants up to speed on the Association and our development of the Certified Learning Practitioner accreditation. I presented:

with their certificates.

Our keynote speaker was Peter Honey who explored the issues of Trainer styles.

Also, we had sessions on Human givens by Duncan John, offering the latest thinking in human behaviours and how to influence learners. Ross Page of Oddball training provided a snippet from their highly successful "Magicians Apprentice" programme.

On the business side we had a session by Mike Morrison on the getting seen (including search engine optimisation) by the estimated 60% of training purchasers that are using the Internet as a source of new providers. Robert Clay provided an energetic and insightful look at Trainer USP.

Initial feedback suggests that we have the formula right for future events and we will be seeking suggestions on topics shortly.

About TrainerBase

We will be enhancing the services we offer on TrainerBase in due course and changing some of the existing services.

CERTIFIED LEARNING PRACTITIONERS: The first cohort of members are now working towards becoming Certified Learning Practitioners. Toni Johnson, Melanie Lisney, Mark Norris and Liz Edwards attended an induction workshop on February 23rd. The next cohort will be inducted in May. If you are interested in being a CLP please get in touch.

OTHER SERVICES: TrainerBase is in negotiation with a number of providers including:

  • Publications (magazine),
  • Insurance brokers and
  • Legal services.

The idea being that these services will be a part or a benefit of Association membership.

Also we at TrainerBase acknowledge that members will have expertise in some areas and not in others, some of which may be required to promote a professional image. With this in mind and capitalising on the expertise within the TrainerBase staff we will start to offer support services to members. These support services include: training activity design, graphic design both of training materials and promotional materials, photo editing, database design for MS Access and MS SQL plus business development advise. Subscribers to TrainerBase will benefit from a discount on any chargeable services.

Featured trainer

The format and concept of featured trainer slot is being changed. We are going to use this to show case Certified Learning Practitioners. The expectations is that CLPs will be interviewed and a short profile written and this displayed on the site. This will be a free facility and champion the accreditation and its benefits.

Opportunities

The following opportunity has been posted on the site in the past week or so:

I am please to report that a small number of opportunities posted in the past couple of months have been from 'direct' purchasers, supplementing those that are looking for 'associate' trainers.

Please do be aware that some opportunities are posted and then removed before they appear in the weekly update. It is advisable to check the site periodically as I do not always send out alerts. If you know of a friend who would be interested in any of the opportunities posted on the site, please feel free to forward them this email (not give them details of the opportunities) and ask them to use this referral code when joining the site: - TB21!*USERID*!07. You will be rewarded for referring the friend.

When considering applying for an opportunity, members should check the requirements including; Subject, Sector Skills and Level Experience. If you do not match the requirement you should not apply for the opportunity, this practice is becoming very unpopular amongst purchasers and other trainers.

If you are interested in using this facility as a way of sourcing independent contractors but are not sure about the best way to approach it, please feel free to email me.

Diary Dates

Few members seem to be using the 'Who's where when' diary facility. Has this lost its appeal?

Survey

The season is upon us when TrainerBase will be conducting a number of Trainer related surveys. These include:

  • We are going to conduct a major piece of research into the status of the freelance and independent learning and development industry. This is to support a project that TrainerBase has sponsored. TJ are looking into 'Learning 2020' in partnership with the Institute for Employment Studies. Our research will form a benchmark on the current state of the market and provide a platform for prediction. I will post further information about this in due course. We will be inviting sponsors to support this survey.
  • We had an excellent response to our Sponsors survey and the information gathered will be very useful when seeking funding support from potential suppliers of services. Please be aware that we will not be passing on any of the data to sponsors, the information will only be reported in the aggregate.
  • And the Trainer Rates survey 2008 will commence in August 2008. Our intention is to include purchaser responses for the first time. We will be inviting sponsors to support this survey.

Resources

Resources that have been downloaded in the past week include (of 413 total). Quite an increase in the past week:

  • Action Learning 8
    Business planning material 8
    Performance management 9
    Administration/Management of Training 10
    Career Development 10
    Sales resources 14
    Self development resources 14
    Tools and Tests 14
    Communication Skills 15
    Soft Skills course material 22
    Assorted support material 29
    Coaching & Mentoring stuff 37
    Management course material 49
Icebreakers, Warm Ups and Warm Downs 51
    Train the Trainer material 64

The resource downloads certainly went quiet during the latter part of last year but seem to be on the up again!! Do remember that sharing resources with the membership is a really positive way of building up your network of contacts, some of which may lead to new contract opportunities.

To satisfy the interest in statistics about the the site, below are some facts and figures that may be useful:

  • Current total number of active members: 5,774 of which 4,038 are UK based.
  • Currently receive the newsletter: 4,476
  • Currently receive offers and ads: 5,076
  • Trainer searches made in the last 28 days: 1,006 of which 255 were for named trainers, indicating that TrainerBase is being used by visitors to find specific trainers.
  • Number of member profile's viewed in the past 28 days: 3,588, of which 2,974 (83%) were viewed by non members (potential purchasers?). This is a definite indicator that visitors to the site are interested in viewing subscriber profiles. Of course if you have not subscribed your profile cannot be viewed.
  • Number of new member types in the past 28 days;
    • Basic user (potential purchaser) 19
    • Supplier 4
    • Trainer 70

  • A cursory review of the Work Function indicated that approximately 40% of active members has indicated their function. Of these 20% indicate a purchasing function, 64% indicating they are independent trainers with no purchasing function.

As a result of our marketing research exercise in 2007, 795 companies requested further information about TrainerBase. Our new Trainer cards promotion pack were forwarded to those that have agreed to receive information by post. The jewel case promotion contains details of 17 Subscribers and the card set can be downloaded from the site. To keep TrainerBase in the mind of these potential purchaser, they will receive the Training Purchasers' Bulletin. The remainder of the Cases will be distributed to purchasers who contact TrainerBase direct and at HRD 2008.

TrainerBase started to take a more proactive approach to finding work for its members; we will be asking companies if they would like proposals from TrainerBase members. The requests for proposal will be posted on the Opportunities page as Brokered Leads.
